Building work is almost complete in the area around the North Rooms on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library. The corridor opposite the main entrance now provides access to both rooms, where you will find journal archives, UK government publications and lesser-used books.

Extra seating on the JBM first floor

If you have visited the JB Morrell Library in the last few days, you may have noticed new seating on the first floor, in what was formerly the stairwell! The new floor which has been installed in this area should help prevent noise travelling from the ground floor into the upper building.

JBM ground floor progress report

Regular visitors to the JB Morrell Library will have noticed that the hoardings on the ground floor have recently been taken down. This should enable heat to circulate more effectively; thanks for bearing with us through the recent cold spell!

The area opposite Lending Services remains fenced off in order to allow contractors to finish decorating and installing furniture. This area will shortly become a new "Reference Lounge" with comfortable seating and light reading.

Installation of an automated book sorter is underway at the rear of the ground floor. Once this is operational, returned books will be transported more quickly to the correct floor for reshelving.

Look out for further news about the refurbished Library Cafe next week.

Installation of new signs in the JBM

Starting tomorrow, contractors will install new signs to help JB Morrell Library users find their way around the refurbished building. These will include free-standing floor guides and plans (similar to the Harry Fairhurst building) and directional signs on the pillars.

This work is scheduled to last approx. 8 days. Any noisy work will take place before the Library opens.

Access to North Rooms from 1st Feb (tomorrow)

Access to all collections in North Room 1 will be restored this evening as scheduled.

Starting tomorrow morning (Wednesday), the old route to North Room 1 on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library will be reopened: down the corridor opposite the main entrance, then through the first door on the left. The gents' and ladies toilets nearby will also be reopened.

Once this corridor is open, the temporary door into North Room 1 in the self-service area at the foot of the main staircase will be closed off.

Until further notice, North Room 2 can be reached through the external tunnel at the rear of North Room 1.

Restricted access to journals in North Room 1 next Tuesday (31st Jan)

The contractors working in the JB Morrell Library have informed Library staff that on Tuesday 31st January, they will need access to an area of the dividing wall between North Rooms 1 and 2, in order to install ducting.

From 08:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, Library staff and users will be unable to access printed journal archives from the following subject collections in North Room 1 (bays 41-60):

HB - International Relations
K - Education
M-MY - English and other literatures
P - Archaeology
D - Sociology
DA - Social Policy & Social Work, Health Sciences.

No stock in North Room 2 will be affected.

New locks for JBM study rooms

On Thursday and Friday this week, contractors will be working on the second floor of the JB Morrell Library to fit new locks to the bookable study rooms. These locks will be compatible with University cards, so that study users no longer have to collect a key from the Library helpdesk.

The contractors will work on each study when it's empty. If you are disturbed by noise from adjacent studies, please speak to Library staff.

Work in JBM North Room 1 tomorrow (Weds 25th)

Tomorrow, contractors will fit new doors to the plant room inside North Room 1 on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library. This work should not affect access to the journal archives and other collections in this room.

The contractors have been asked to ensure they do not block the route of Library users heading to the mobile shelves in North Room 1. They have told us that they're happy to be asked to move if they're in your way! Please speak to Library staff at the helpdesk if you have any concerns.

Hoardings on JBM ground floor

Today on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library, new floor-to-ceiling hoardings are being installed around the north side of the building where refurbishment work is still underway. This should reduce the drafts and dust blowing into the public areas of the ground floor.

Contractors are scheduled to complete work on the ground floor corridor leading to the stairs to the Raymond Burton Library this week, and we hope to reopen this thoroughfare on Friday. The temporary route to the RBL through the glass-fronted room with turnstiles will be closed off shortly afterwards. This room will become a new purpose-built home for the Key Texts collection when the ground floor refurbishment is complete.

Overnight power shutdown in the JBM Friday to Saturday

New power cables in the JB Morrell Library will be connected to the network overnight on Friday 20th January. It will be necessary to shut down all power after the Library closes at midnight on Friday. The Raymond Burton Library and Harry Fairhurst building will not be affected.

We expect that power will be fully restored before the Library opens at 10:00 on Saturday 21st January.

JBM ground floor: some noisy work this week

Unfortunately it may be necessary for contractors to carry out some noisy work during Library opening hours this week, at the rear of the ground floor in the JB Morrell Library. Library staff will monitor the work closely in order to minimise disturbance.

Noise is less likely to reach the upper floors of the JBM. However, you may encounter contractors carrying out localised plastering, touching up of paintwork etc. If you are disturbed by refurbishment work taking place around you, please speak to Library staff at the ground floor helpdesk.

If you want to be sure of avoiding disturbance, take advantage of the quiet study areas provided in the Raymond Burton Library and the second floor of the Harry Fairhurst building.

JBM ground floor toilets closed this morning

The ground floor gents, ladies and disabled toilets in the JB Morrell Library are closed this morning to enable the completion of ceiling work in this area of the ground floor. They will reopen this afternoon.

Alternative toilets are available on the upper floors of the JBM, and at the foot of the stairs to the Raymond Burton Library.

Countdown to completion of construction work in the JBM

The JB Morrell Library refurbishment project is scheduled for completion in 6 weeks, much to the relief of Library staff and no doubt users as well! You should notice the following new developments in the next few weeks:

25th January ~ a new internal route to the Raymond Burton Library, and additional seating on the JBM first floor.

30th January ~ hoardings taken down on the north side of the JBM ground floor. Installation of new signing and floorplans starts.

20th February ~ the new Library cafe opens on the JBM ground floor.

The contractors are scheduled to finally complete all work on the ground floor by 24th February. An end is in sight to the disruption...

Work in the JBM this week

This week, contractors in the JB Morrell Library are working on the first floor around the stairwell, and behind the hoardings on the ground floor. New carpet will be laid at the bottom of the JBM staircase on Thursday morning.

The ground floor gents and ladies toilets will be closed for a short time this week - please use the toilets on the JBM upper floors, or at the foot of the stairs to the Raymond Burton Library.

Any noisy work this week is scheduled to take place before the Library opens at 08:00 each day. However, if you are disturbed by contractors, or have any difficulty finding your way around the building, please speak to staff at Lending Services.

Minor works underway on the JBM ground floor

Contractors are currently working towards completing the refurbishment of the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library. You may be aware of work taking place inside the entrance turnstiles, at the base of the main staircase, in the corridor leading to the JBM ground floor toilets, and also the temporary access route between North Room 1 and 2.

If your route is impeded or you are at all inconvenienced by contractors' work, please speak to Library staff at the ground floor helpdesk.

All major building work is scheduled for completion by 10th February, and the final commissioning and decoration by 24th February. Only 7 weeks to go!

Internal link restored between JBM and Harry Fairhurst

Here's some good news: it's no longer necessary to traverse the plastic walkway across the grass between the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building, as the internal link between the two buildings has reopened this afternoon as scheduled.

The external doorway into the Harry Fairhurst building (which leads into the cafe and the lobby at the bottom of the main staircase) has now reverted to its original designation as a fire exit. Please don't attempt to use this doorway to enter or leave the building except in an emergency.

Library refurbishment on schedule for completion Spring term 2012!

Library users will be pleased to know that an end to the disruption is at last in sight: all aspects of the refurbishment are on schedule for completion in 11 weeks' time. The next significant milestone will be the reopening of the ground floor link between the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building, scheduled for Monday 19th December.

Further information about the new facilities to be installed during the Spring term is available on the Library website. Forthcoming developments include a new ground floor cafe, and additional quiet study space on the JBM first floor.

Temporary route to North Rooms 1 and 2

Contractors are now working in the corridor leading from the JB Morrell ground floor lobby into North Rooms 1 and 2. An alternative route to the North Rooms has been provided. Access to the gents, ladies and disabled toilets nearby will not be affected.

To reach North Room 1 and its collections of journals, start from the new self-service area at the bottom of the main staircase, and follow the signs through the doorway at the rear.

For the additional journal collections and government publications in North Room 2, start from North Room 1, turn left and head through the fire exit at the far end into an external tunnel. Turn right and walk down the tunnel until you reach the fire exit into the back of North Room 2.

Temporary route to Key Texts, RBL and Borthwick Institute

Library users heading for the Key Texts collection, the Raymond Burton Library or the Borthwick Institute for Archives will notice that the route through the hoardings is now slightly different. Follow the signs into the glass-fronted room next to the helpdesk (this room will become a permanent new home for Key Texts in due course), and out through the rear into the RBL lobby. Go through the turnstile on your right into Key Texts, or up the stairs to the RBL and Borthwick.

New location in JBM for self-service terminals

Now that the hoardings around the bottom of the main staircase in the JB Morrell Library have been removed, we can provide dedicated space in this area for self-service terminals for borrowing and returning books. The terminals formerly provided on the first floor and adjacent to the main entrance have been relocated.

Access to JBM North Rooms

JB Morrell Library users will notice that the internal hoardings on the ground floor have recently been moved into new positions, in order to allow contractors into areas which have not yet been refurbished. For the remainder of this week, access to North Rooms 1 and 2 is unchanged - follow the path through the internal hoardings directly ahead as you come through the entrance turnstiles. A new covered route to the North Rooms will be provided next week.

The work underway behind the hoardings at the rear of the ground floor may be noisy for the next three to four days. This noise is not expected to reach the upper floors of the JBM. However, please speak to Library staff if your study is disturbed.

New JBM self-service area next week

Refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library ground floor area at the bottom of the main staircase is on schedule for completion next Wednesday (30th November). On Thursday 1st December, Library staff will have access to this area to install self-service machines for issuing and returning books.

The additional machines should relieve the queues which some Library users have experienced recently whilst space has been limited on the ground floor. Thanks for your patience whilst these essential works are underway.

Visitors to the JB Morrell Library may be aware of noise disturbance arising from construction work currently taking place in the area behind the hoardings on the ground floor, and around the main staircase on the first floor. This work is scheduled for completion in early December, and some of the hoardings will be removed before the end of term.

Returning books to the JB Morrell Library

Our apologies to any Library users who have experienced queues at the self-service returns terminal inside the entrance turnstiles on the ground floor of the JBM. Remember that you can borrow books from the self-service terminals on the first floor.

Current provision of self-service terminals on the ground floor is limited by the number of power and network sockets accessible whilst contractors are working in this area. Before the end of this term a brand-new self service room with a number of terminals will be provided on the ground floor. Library staff are working to develop an interim solution to minimise queues - look out for more information later this week.

JBM new helpdesk now open

The new helpdesk on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library opened to users for the first time on Friday afternoon. For all enquiries and services during staffed opening hours, please ask at the new helpdesk, close to the main entrance and exit. During "self-service" opening hours, the helpdesk is not staffed.

A reminder of other changes to the JBM ground floor during the current phase of work:

Self-service terminals for borrowing books are located on the first floor, in a room adjacent to the display of current newspapers and the Law (J) collections. A self-service terminal for returning books is sited just inside the main entrance on the ground floor.

To return books when the Library is closed, deposit them in the purple box outside the main entrance.

Books awaiting reshelving can be found in open rooms at the rear of the first and second floors, close to the service lift.

The ground floor North Rooms remain open - compact shelving for printed journal archives, less well-used book collections and UK government publications. Follow the signs through the hoardings for access to the North Rooms.

Government publications on microform, plus reading equipment, have been moved to the Raymond Burton Library Reading Room on the first floor.

Public lockers are now located on the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library, in the room next door to Key Texts. Ask for a locker key at the new helpdesk.

Public toilets on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library will reopen today. Additional ground floor toilets can be found at the bottom of the stairs to the upper floors of the Raymond Burton Library.

In some cases these new locations are permanent (including the helpdesk), but other services and facilities will move again when the ground floor refurbishment is complete. Thanks for your patience; keep following this blog for further information.

JBM ground floor latest moves: self-service terminals

The JB Morrell Library's self-service terminals for borrowing books can now be found on the JBM first floor, in a room adjacent to the current newspapers display and the Law collections (J) . The terminals have been moved from their former ground floor location in the room next door to the helpdesk, in order for contractors to gain access to this area.

An additional self-service terminal for returning books is located just inside the main entrance on the ground floor.

The North Rooms on the JBM ground floor are open as normal - follow the signed route through the hoardings.

A new Library helpdesk nearer to the main entrance and exit will open later today. Library staff and contractors are doing everything they can to minimise disruption - our apologies for any inconvenience you experience whilst these essential works to modernise the ground floor are completed.

JBM North Rooms corridor - moves underway

Contractors have removed some of the hoardings from the JB Morrell Library ground floor overnight, to reveal the new helpdesk, which will become operational later this week - further news to follow.

Hoardings are currently being reassembled on the north side of the ground floor, to create a safe access route to the North Rooms (for older books, journal archives and government publications) whilst the next stage of refurbishment is underway.

Collections and facilities formerly located in the corridor adjacent to the North Rooms can now be found elsewhere:

Public lockers are now sited on the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library, in the room next door to Key Texts. To obtain a key for a locker, please ask at the staffed helpdesk in the JB Morrell Library.

The microfiche cabinets containing UK government publications have been moved to the Reading Room on the first floor of the Raymond Burton Library, along with microfiche readers and printers, and the standalone PC for UK government CD-ROMs.

JBM Library helpdesk moving to a new location this week

Contractors are scheduled to hand over the south side of the JB Morrell Library ground floor (overlooking University Road) this week, at which point Library staff will move the reception and helpdesk into the newly-refurbished area, closer to the main entrance and exit. Please bear with us if you experience any disruption to ground floor services while the move takes place. We aim to have everything running smoothly by Friday afternoon.

Once the new helpdesk is operational, the north side of the ground floor will be closed to Library users, so that refurbishment can be completed. An access route to the North Rooms (for printed journals, exam papers and specialist book collections) will be maintained throughout this period.

Public lockers currently located in the corridor outside North Rooms 1 and 2 will be moved to the Raymond Burton Library ground floor, in the room next door to Key Texts. The ground floor toilets nearest to the North Rooms are scheduled to reopen later this week.

New entrance to the JB Morrell Library now open

A brand new main entrance to the JB Morrell Library which faces the bridge over University Road has opened this morning. Enter through the turnstiles into the main lobby on the ground floor, with the temporary Lending Services and Help & Information desk straight in front of you, and stairs and lifts to the upper floors on your left. Turn right past the front of Lending Services to reach the Key Texts collection, the Raymond Burton Library and Borthwick Institute for Archives.

The same set of doors also forms the main exit to the Library - please pass through the security gates on your way out. The former entrance and exit near to the temporary Key Texts room are no longer in use.

The book return box has been relocated near the new Library entrance: this box is unlocked when the Library is closed, to enable you to return books outside normal opening hours.

Space for quiet study

Apologies for any disturbance Library users experience whilst construction work is underway on the ground floor. If you're looking for somewhere quiet to study, remember that the Raymond Burton Library reading room has the same opening hours as the JB Morrell Library. Wi-fi and a limited number of networked PCs are available.

Next door to the JB Morrell Library, the Harry Fairhurst building also has the same opening hours, and provides study space for over 500 people. To reach the temporary entrance to the Harry Fairhurst building, follow the path around the hoardings outside the JBM. On the ground floor of the Fairhurst, you'll find Freshers cafe, and classroom LFA/015 with 55 networked PCs. Additional "thin client" terminals, study desks and comfy seating are available on the upper floors.

Fire exits in the JBM

When you visit the JB Morrell Library, please ensure that you are familiar with the locations of the fire exits on the upper floors, which lead to external stairways. In the event of a fire alarm, please try to avoid using the internal stairs and main exit on the ground floor, as space is restricted in these areas whilst the refurbishment is underway. On the ground floor, an alternative fire exit can be found at the far end of the corridor leading to the North Rooms.

Returning students: summary of changes since June

Are you visiting the JB Morrell Library this week for the first time since the summer term? You'll notice that the first floor is now fully operational, and work has begun on the final phase of the Library refurbishment, with hoardings and scaffolding on the ground floor. Here's a summary of the main changes:

Hoardings around the front of the JB Morrell Library have made the entrance narrower. A brand new main entrance will open on Monday 17th October, facing the bridge which crosses University Road.

Inside the Library, constructors are working on the south side of the ground floor (overlooking the main road) to create a new Lending Services and Key Texts area.

While this work is underway, the Lending Services desk and Help & Information are operating from the opposite side of the first floor. Self-service terminals for borrowing and returning books and other items are located to the right of Lending Services, in the former Photocopying Office.

The Key Texts (short loan) collection has a temporary home until the refurbishment is complete: turn right as you enter the Library, and go through the turnstile into the former PC classroom.

Continue down the corridor past the Key Texts room to find the new home for the self-service photocopiers. Additional new copiers have been installed throughout the Library and the Harry Fairhurst building. You can also print or scan on these machines, and they're operated with your University Card.

The JB Morrell Library ground floor toilets are closed temporarily. Public toilets are available on all upper floors, and on the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library (opposite the Key Texts room).

The whole first floor of the JB Morrell Library is now open to users, and the subject layout has been rearranged. Floorplans are available from the Lending Services desk on the ground floor.

The first floor provides additional study rooms for individuals and groups, bookable online. Two new PC classrooms will be opening shortly.

The "reshelving area" at the bottom of the stairwell in the JB Morrell Library has now closed. Books awaiting reshelving are located on the first and second floors, in rooms towards the rear of the building.

The internal link between the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building is closed until the spring term. To reach the Harry Fairhurst building, follow the path around the outside of the JB Morrell Library and across the lawn.

Freshers cafe has temporarily relocated to the ground floor of the Harry Fairhurst building, and is open 09:00-14:30 Monday to Friday. A brand-new, larger cafe will open in the JB Morrell Library in the spring term.

Mobile crane in Campus North car park on Thursday

A mobile crane is required for work at the rear of the JB Morrell Library on Thursday 29th September. The crane will be sited in Campus North car park; barriers will be in place to protect pedestrians.

Remember that the pedestrian route from Campus North car park to the Library goes around the outside of the Harry Fairhurst building. This route will be unaffected by the presence of the crane.

Furniture installation on JBM first floor

If you wish to study in the Library, you may prefer to find a space on the second or third floor at this time. If you have any questions, please ask Library staff on the ground floor.

Scaffolding in the JBM

Further scaffolding will be erected this week around the stairwell and lift in the JB Morrell Library, to enable contractors to work on the ceiling ducts and install carpets. Apologies for any inconvenience; the lift and stairs remain accessible. The scaffolding is scheduled for removal before the start of term on 10th October.

Temporary footpath between JBM and Harry Fairhurst building

Work is underway to erect an exterior hoarding around the front of the JB Morrell Library, so that contractors can refurbish ground floor areas (including Freshers cafe). A temporary footpath will be laid across the grass to connect the main entrances of the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building.

Directional signs will be installed as soon as the hoarding is complete. A new, larger and more central entrance to the JB Morrell Library is scheduled to open shortly.

Work on JBM main staircase starts tomorrow

Contractors will shortly need access to the ground floor ceiling around the main stairwell in the JB Morrell Library. For this reason, it will be necessary to erect a hoarding which will narrow the stairway. This hoarding will remain in place until November.

Apologies for any inconvenience - you may prefer to use the lift if the main stairwell is busy. If it's necessary to evacuate the building in an emergency, please use the fire exits on the upper floors of the JBM to reach the external staircases.

JBM fire alarm test tomorrow morning

Testing of the fire alarm on the newly-refurbished first floor of the JB Morrell Library will take place tomorrow morning, starting at 08:30. Signs have been erected in the Library, and a PA announcement will inform Library users that the alarm is a test. It will not be necessary to leave the building.

JBM first floor book retrieval service this week

Contractors in JB Morrell Library today

Due to unforeseen circumstances, contractors will need to use the main entrance to the JB Morrell Library today in order to access work areas on the ground and first floor. If you visit the Library today you may notice an unusually high number of men in hard hats in public areas!

All regular Library services will be maintained throughout the day. Please speak to Library staff at the Lending Services desk if you have any concerns.

JBM first floor book moves - schedule

The refurbishment of the north side of the first floor of the JB Morrell Library is currently ahead of schedule, and the transfer of books onto new shelving will begin this Friday (9th September). While books are in transit, Library staff will offer a retrieval service.

The first section of books to be moved will be G and GA (Economics and Management). To obtain a book from this section on Friday or during the weekend, please ask the staff at Lending Services on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library, or telephone 01904 43 3873. Staff will collect the books at regular intervals, and hold them at Lending Services for you.

From Monday 12th September, further sections of stock will be moved onto the new shelving, in the following order:

The north side of the first floor is scheduled to reopen to Library users after 1pm on Friday 16th September.

Activities on JBM first floor this week

Concrete cutting on the first floor of the JB Morrell Library was completed according to schedule on Friday 2nd September. In preparation for reopening the whole first floor on Friday 16th September, the following activities are scheduled this week:

Installation of shelving
Installation of screen doors and window blinds
Testing and commissioning of PA systems

Relocation of Library stock on the first floor will take place during the week beginning Monday 12th September, and a book retrieval service will operate during this period. Further news to follow.

If you are disturbed by contractors working in the Library, please speak to Library staff. You may prefer to study in the Raymond Burton Library or Harry Fairhurst building during this phase of the refurbishment project.

Noisy work on JBM first floor next week

Library staff have just received notification that some unforeseen noisy work on the north side of the JB Morrell Library first floor will need to take place next week. Contractors will be cutting through concrete, so it's likely that the noise will affect other areas of the building.

Work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday 30th August and be completed on Friday 2nd September between the hours of 6:00am and 4:00pm. It's essential that this work is carried out as soon as possible in order to reopen the first floor on 16th September.

Remember that quiet study space is available close by in the Harry Fairhurst building and Raymond Burton Library. The opening hours for all Library sites over the August bank holiday weekend can be found on the Library website.

The area on the north side of the first floor of the JB Morrell Library which is currently closed to users is on schedule to reopen 16th September. Following the installation of shelving in the week beginning 5th September, most book collections on the first floor will be moved to new permanent locations on the same floor.

It's likely that the whole first floor will be closed to Library users for most of the week beginning 12th September in order to complete the book moves as quickly as possible. Library staff will offer a retrieval service from the ground floor desk. Further information will be provided via this blog as soon as arrangements are confirmed.

Noisy work on JBM ground floor this week

Contractors are currently working on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library, and noise may reach other floors at times. Quiet study areas are available close by in the Harry Fairhurst building and the Raymond Burton Library. Throughout the summer vacation, both buildings have the same opening hours as the JBM.

Scheduled developments for the JBM first floor in September

In the run-up to this date, it's likely that access to the first floor book collections (most social science subjects, plus Psychology, Health and Medicine) will be limited. Closure of Link between JB Morrell Library and Harry Fairhurst Building

From 18th July until November 2011 the link between the JB Morrell Library and Harry Fairhurst will be closed and the two buildings will operate independently of each other.

The temporary Fairhurst entrance will be situated at the South West side of the Harry Fairhurst Building (by the external lift and staircase). The entrance to the Library maintains its current position.

JBM ground floor moves ahead of schedule!

The rearrangement of the JB Morrell Library ground floor, to enable refurbishment of the south side, is progressing steadily. Latest developments today:

The Key Texts collection is in transition to its new location in the Raymond Burton Library seminar room 1 (ground floor). Until the move is completed, you will need to take Key Texts to the main Lending Services desk in order to borrow or return them.

The JBM Photocopying Office has closed, and the self-service photocopiers formerly located in this area have been moved to the far end of the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library. For assistance with photocopying, please ask at Lending Services.

The Library Catalogue terminals formerly located on the JBM ground floor have been re-sited on the RBL ground floor.

The new Lending Services desk on the north side of the JBM ground floor should be operational later today. Please ask Library staff if you have any questions.

JBM Group Studies unavailable tomorrow and Friday

A reminder that AV installation is scheduled 7-8 July for the two bookable Group Studies on the second floor of the JB Morrell Library. The studies will be unavailable to use on these dates. Alternative areas for groups to work without disturbing others are provided in the adjacent Harry Fairhurst building and the New Building Study Centre in Heslington Village.

JBM ground floor works this week

Help & Information and the Lending Services desk are currently being dismantled and reassembled on the north side of the ground floor, in order to enable contractors to refurbish the south side.

The Photocopying Office and self-service photocopiers will move into the Raymond Burton Library on Friday 8th July.

The Key Texts collection and desk will remain in their established location until Monday 11th July, when Key Texts will be moved to the Raymond Burton Library seminar rooms on the ground floor.

The comfy seating formerly located in the Open Zone on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library has been moved to the ground floor of the adjacent Harry Fairhurst building. Please visit the new Harry Fairhurst Open Zone when you want to eat, drink or use your mobile phone. Freshers cafe closes shortly for refurbishment, and a temporary cafe stall will be located in the Harry Fairhurst building.

The book returns box in the wall outside the main entrance to the JBM has been sealed whilst contractors are working on the area behind the wall. A temporary book returns bin has been installed nearby. Use this bin to return books when the Library is closed.

All Library services will be maintained throughout this phase of work - ask Library staff if you're not sure where to go.

JBM stock moves next week

Starting on Monday 4th July, some of the collections currently located on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library will be moved elsewhere in the building, in order to enable contractors to begin work on the ground floor.

Moves are scheduled as follows:
Monday 4th July ~ Audiovisual Collection relocated to the Collaborative Space on the JBM second floor.
Tuesday 5th July ~ Y Journals move from North Room 3 to the first floor. D and DA Journals begin moving from North Room 3 to the mobile shelving in North Room 1.
Thursday 7th July ~ relocation of D and DA Journals completed. Current newspapers move from North Room 3 to the JBM first floor, adjacent to Economics and Management books (G-GA).

Stock will remain accessible throughout. If you are unable to find the material you're looking for, please ask for assistance at Help & Information or the Lending Services desk on the JBM ground floor.

Freshers cafe closing 8 July for major refurbishment

During the summer vacation, contractors will start to remodel the JB Morrell Library ground floor. Work scheduled for completion by March 2012 includes a new centrally-positioned entrance, reception and help desk, self-service borrowing and return points, an informal study area and additional social space.

Planned developments include a new larger cafe on the site of Freshers, with internal access from the Library. The existing Freshers cafe will close on Friday 8th July so that work can get underway.

AV installation - progress

The installation of audiovisual equipment in the Harry Fairhurst building is progressing according to schedule (see post for 21st June below). If you find that the room you want to use is temporarily unavailable, you are encouraged to explore the building for alternative suitable space.

One addition to the schedule: the JB Morrell Library group studies will be unavailable 7-8 July whilst plasma screens and network connections are installed.

JB Morrell Library - noisy work this summer

Contractors are now working in the boarded-off area on the north side of the first floor of the JBM. Users of the second floor Silent Study Zone and group studies may be aware of increased noise travelling up from the floor below.

The Silent Study Room on the third floor of the Raymond Burton Library will remain open throughout the summer vacation, and contractors are not scheduled to work in this area. Group study rooms in the Harry Fairhurst building provide an alternative to the JB Morrell Library.

Construction work scheduled for summer vacation in JBM

The Library refurbishment project is scheduled to move into Phase 6 immediately after the end of the summer term: refurbishment of the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library to include a brand new entrance, staffed service areas and a larger cafe.

All Library services will be maintained while the ground floor refurbishment is underway, but some relocation will be necessary. Importantly, the Key Texts collection will be housed in the seminar rooms on the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library July-December 2011.

Freshers cafe and the internal link between the JBM and Harry Fairhurst buildings will be closed from July, while work on the JBM ground floor is underway. The external fire doors will provide a temporary entrance to the Harry Fairhurst building until the link is reopened.

Harry Fairhurst footpath closure 6-17 June

The footpath around the Harry Fairhurst building which provides a pedestrian route between the Library and the Campus North car park has been temporarily closed, in order to undertake remedial works and improve disabled access. The route is scheduled to re-open on Saturday 18th June.

For access from Campus North to the Library while the work is underway, follow the pedestrian route past Alcuin College A Block and the Seebohm Rowntree building, then across the bridge over Morrell Way.

Library users with restricted mobility who are visiting the Library by car are advised to park in the Central car park, and use the access lift to reach the bridge over University Road to the Library.

JBM first floor book move has started

Moving book stock from the north side of the JB Morrell Library first floor to the newly refurbished south side (overlooking University Road) is now underway. The south side will remain closed to Library users until the stock move is complete (scheduled for Friday afternoon this week).

If the books you require have been moved into the closed area, you should complete a request form at the Lending Services desk on the ground floor. Library staff are available to retrieve books on demand 08:00-22:00.

The steam-clean of the JB Morrell Library external walls is scheduled to finish today, and when it's completed, the external scaffolding will be dismantled.

Tenporary hoardings around the first floor of the JBM are currently being dismantled in preparation for moving stock next week. The south side of the first floor (overlooking University Road) is scheduled to open to Library users at the end of next week.

A permanent pedestrian route between the north car park and the main entrance of the University Library has opened this week, including an external lift for anyone who prefers not to use stairs.

The hoardings on the south side of the first floor of the JB Morrell Library have been removed to enable contractors to install carpets and furnishings. This area is scheduled to open to Library users before the end of term. In the meantime, for access to the books on the north side of the first floor, follow the signed route through the area where contractors are working.

Starting from Monday 6th June (Week 7), books will be moved from their current location on the north side of the first floor to the newly refurbished south side. The south side will remain closed to Library users until the stock move is complete. During the move, an instant on-demand book retrieval service will be run from the Lending Services desk on the ground floor.

The estimated completion date is Friday 10 June. A detailed schedule of each day’s moves will be published nearer the time. Library staff are making every effort to minimise disruption for students who have examinations during this period.

From Monday 23rd May, the hoardings will be dismantled around the current access route from the stairwell to the bookshelves on the first floor of the JB Morrell Library. Contractors will still be present, completing the refurbishment of the south side of the first floor (overlooking University Road).

Signs will direct visitors to the first floor along a new route from the stairwell to the bookshelves. This will be a temporary route until the refurbished area is reopened to the public in a few weeks' time.

Further information about the next stage of the refurbishment work on the first floor will follow shortly.

Fitting out the area behind the hoardings on the first floor of the JB Morrell Library is underway. This week, the work scheduled will involve drilling into columns and demolition of internal walls. Next week (commencing 4th April), contractors will be cutting through the floor in the second floor reshelving area to install a new lift. Noise levels will be monitored throughout, and work will be halted if the agreed limit is breached during open hours. However, you may wish to consider working elsewhere on campus to study undisturbed.

Access to JBM Photocopying Office next week

From Monday 21st March, contractors will be working in the Open Zone on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library. Areas where contractors are present will be boarded off. The Photocopying Office will remain open as normal, but access may be through the boarded area. Signs will be in place to show you the way.

The Photographic Department office has already moved from the JB Morrell Library to a new office in the Raymond Burton Library, next door to the PC classroom on the ground floor.

JBM ground floor: work begins next week

In preparation for the refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library ground floor which is scheduled to start in July 2011, the main entrance area layout will be rearranged next week (from Monday 21st March):

One entry gate will be taken out of action. Visitors should enter and exit the building through the signed gate.
Self-return machines will be moved to the far end of the ground floor open zone, near the doors which lead to the main JBM stairwell.
The refurbishment notice board and plasma screen in the ground floor open zone will be temporarily removed.

Crane in Campus North car park next Wednesday

A mobile crane will be sited in Campus North car park on Wednesday 16th March, in order to remove equipment from the roof of the JB Morrell Library. Pedestrian access between the car park and the Library will be maintained via the new route around the western end of the Harry Fairhurst building (formerly Computer Science).

New pedestrian access route from Campus North car park

From today, a new route is open for pedestrians approaching the JB Morrell Library from the Campus North car park. The route follows an external staircase around the west elevation of the Harry Fairhurst building (formerly Computer Science).

The temporary access route provided via the fire escape stairs at the rear of the JBM is now closed, in order to construct an internal link between the JBM and Harry Fairhurst.

An access route without steps is currently maintained via Alcuin college. Follow the path from the car park to the Seebohm Rowntree building, then over the footbridge to the Library entrance. When complete, the refurbished Harry Fairhurst building will include an external lift for disabled access.

Whilst the Library refurbishment is underway, disabled visitors arriving by car should use the Campus Central car park, in order to access the lift connecting with the bridge across University Road to the Library entrance.

JBM study rooms: today

It's been necessary to close the first floor of the JB Morrell Library today, due to a faulty fire alarm. Library staff are operating an hourly book retrieval service, starting at 12.30. To request a book from the first floor, please complete a request form at the Lending Services desk.

Access to book collections and study areas on the other floors of the JB Morrell Library is not restricted.

An engineer has been called to repair the alarm. We hope to have normal service restored by the end of the day. Apologies for the inconvenience.

A pedestrian route from the car park to the Library will be retained throughout the works, via the fire escape stairs at the rear of the Library. At the bottom of the stairs, follow the signs around the side of the building to the main Library entrance which faces University Road.
